Wyatt C. Louis (AB)
A fairly recent Calgary transplant, Louis has made an impact here with songs built from soaring melodies, railroad-like finger picking and quiet, haunting vocals and lyrical phrasing. Louis’s dark, rustic tales meld folk and soulful blues to tell tales of love, loss and the journey home. They’re beautiful, subtle creations that juxtapose emotions, striking imagery and experiences that charm and envelop listeners. With the sweet and intimate EP On a Journey for the Long Run under his belt, Louis is gearing up to record and release his first full-length album.

Biography by Kerry Clarke

Ben Cottrill (BC)
Raised among five skilled musicians, Cottrill’s grit was instilled early on, as was his love for classic Folk, Rock and Soul music. At 17, his first EP scored him a win as a finalist in the Canada’s Walk of Fame Emerging Artists’ Program and career support from Universal Music.

Turbulent heartbreak arose shortly thereafter, and Cottrill traded in Canada for the Mediterranean coast and the United Kingdom. The year-long immersion into the rich music and culture of the Old World yielded his second EP Spice-Box, which gained over 120,000 streams the following year.

Upon finishing the Spice-Box Tour, Cottrill was chosen from 20,000 applicants across Canada to appear on CTV’s music series The Launch as one of the select artists working with both Bryan Adams and industry mogul Scott Borchetta on the program.

Visualized by unique single-shot music videos, the release of new singles “Won’t Be With You” and “Little Town” was supported by a vibrant summer tour through Western Canada.

Bryan Michael
Bryan Michael creates art that chronicles his own experiences through melancholic songs about winning some, losing more, and getting punched in the face. His bittersweet combination of radically vulnerable lyrics and soaring vocals impel you to feel every single thing that he feels.

Distractions is a vessel for striking, existential unburdening in which Michael funnels first-person accounts of grief, depression, yearning, rejection, and self-worth into a worldview that seems both chaotic and consoling. In his unbridled but steady voice, a voice trained on pop-punk in his previous project Sharks! On Fire! and later subdued to spare, acoustic rock, Michael searches for meaning in a world so full of pain it can drive a person mad. The old cliche about musicians having their whole lives to make their debut ring true here, the earliest composition and single, Demons, dates back to Michael’s early twenties; A song he crafted as a means of catharsis during times of confusion and fragility. Having an abundance of western-Canadian shows under his belt, it won’t be long before this songwriter’s wry observation and emotional honesty has everybody talking.

The Vancouver Poetry Slam is an ongoing event, every Monday, at Café Deux Soleils. There is an open mic section, and then a poetry slam competition. We usually have a feature poet as well. Founded in 1996, Van Slam is the longest-running poetry slam in Canada. Since 2008, there have been regular poetry slams every Monday of every month.

In a regular poetry slam, the poet must perform a poem of their own, of any style, within a time limit without the aid of props or music. 5 randomly selected audience members will become judges and are given score cards to score the poet from zero to 10. The poets with the highest scores after 2 rounds of poems are the winners of cash prizes. Every slam has 10-12 spots open for poets with the top 5 going on to the 2nd round. check out www.vanslam.ca for more up to date and in-depth details of rules!

Chelsea D.E Johnson

Chelsea DE Johnson is a powerful voice for female empowerment bursting from the depths of East Van. Rivky

Rivky, NYC songwriter, is currently nominated by the International Music Entertainment Awards, Folk Artist Of The Year, with her song, “Hear Me Mr. Honey,” produced by Grammy-winning Amy Lee, of Evanescence. Rivky is currently an advocacy speaker giving musical performances while speaking of her lived experiences with schizophrenia to students/mental health initiatives, shining a light on psychosis. Rivky is a soulful, cabaret-ish, Jaques Brelian, Freddie Mercury nostalgia, beautifully hard to pin down, held by the seat of her funny pants, slapping stigma silly whilst singing jazzy-bluesy-folky, sometimes theatrical compositions. Rivky grew up living Orthodox Jewish, in the Hasidic “Amish” like culture but left it.
